SNAP benefit cards would move to chip and tap under a USDA proposal
A proposed rule published on 23 October 2026 would move SNAP EBT cards from magnetic stripes to chip and contactless cards, let households block online and out-of-state use, and stretch transaction history from 2 months to 12. Comments are due by 22 December 2026.
