The IRS can now take card payments itself and pass the fee on
Final IRS regulations effective 19 October 2026 let the IRS accept tax payments by credit or debit card directly, pay the card processing costs, and recoup the full amount from the people who pay by card through a reimbursement fee that is not a tax and cannot be refunded.
